The selling prices in wholesale trade were 2.0% higher in March 2023 than in March 2022. The annual rates of change in February 2023 and in January 2023 had been +8.9% and +10.6%, respectively. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) further reports that, compared with the previous month, wholesale prices slightly increased by 0.2% in March 2023.

The high annual rate of change for wholesale prices mainly derives from increased prices for food, beverages and tobacco (+16.4%), especially for meat and meat products (+20.0%), fruit, vegetables and potatoes (+20.0%), and as well as for milk, dairy products, eggs, edible oils and fats (+19.6%). Also living animals (+37.6%) and building materials and elements (+19.8%) had a large impact on the annual rate of change in March 2023.
