The average household size was 3.35
According to the results of Address Based Population Registration System (ABPRS); in Turkey, the average household size showed a tendency to decrease by declining from 3.69 persons in 2012 to 3.35 persons in 2019. When it was analyzed by provinces; the province with the highest average size of households was Şırnak with 6.11 persons in 2019. Şırnak was followed by Hakkari with 5.39 and Şanlıurfa with 5.38 persons. The province with the lowest average size of households was Çanakkale with 2.63 persons. This province was followed by Eskişehir with 2.68 and Balıkesir with 2.71 persons.

While the proportion of extended-family households decreased, the proportion of one-person households increased
One-family households are defined as households comprising a couple without children or a couple with at least one child or a lone parent with at least one child. Within the scope of this definition, according to the results of ABPRS; the proportion of one-family households in our country was 67.4% in 2014 and 65.1% in 2019.
While the proportion of one-person households was 13.9% in 2014, it was observed that this proportion increased to 16.9% in 2019. As the proportion of extended-family households which is defined as households covering at least one nuclear family household with non-family member(s) was 16.7% in 2014, this proportion was 15.0% in 2019. It was observed that while the proportion of multi-person no-family households was 2.1% in 2014, it increased to 3.0% in 2019.

The province with the highest proportion of one-person households was Tunceli
The province which had the highest proportion of one-person households was Tunceli with 26.4% in 2019. This province was followed by Giresun with 25.7% and Gümüşhane with 25.6%. The province which had the lowest proportion of one-person households was Diyarbakır with 9.4%. This province was followed by Van and Batman with 9.8%.

Osmaniye had the highest proportion of one-family households
The province which had the highest proportion of one-family households was Osmaniye with 72.6% in 2019. Osmaniye was followed by Kayseri with 72.1% and Gaziantep with 71.7%. The province which had the lowest proportion of one-family households was Tunceli with 54.3%. This province was followed by Artvin with 54.9% and Kastamonu with 55.7%.

Lone parents with at least one child families constituted 9.2% of households
The proportion of lone parents with at least one resident child families in total households was 9.2% in Turkey in 2019. When it was analyzed in detail, 2.0% of total households were lone fathers with at least one child families, 7.2% was lone mothers with at least one resident child families.
Bingöl had the highest proportion of households with lone parents
The province with the highest proportion of lone parents with at least one child resident families was Bingöl with 11.2% in 2019. This province was followed by Adana with 11.0% and Malatya with 10.9%. The provinces with the lowest proportion were Ardahan and Tokat with 6.8%, Kars, Nevşehir, Bitlis and Bayburt with 6.9%.
The provinces with the highest proportion of lone mothers with at least one resident child were Bingöl with 8.9%, Adana with 8.7% and İzmir with 8.6%. The provinces with the lowest proportion were Ardahan with 4.8%, Burdur, Tokat and Bayburt with 5.2%, Kars and Yozgat with 5.3%. The provinces with the highest proportion of lone fathers with at least one resident child were Kilis with 3.4%, Gümüşhane with 3.2%, and Malatya with 2.9%. The provinces with the lowest proportion were Nevşehir with 1.4% and Kayseri with 1.5%.

The province which had the highest proportion of extended-family households which was defined as households covering at least one nuclear family household with non-family member(s) was Şırnak with 28.0% in 2019. This province was followed by Hakkari with 26.4% and Batman with 23.1%. The province which had the lowest proportion of extended-family households was Eskişehir with 9.3%. This province was followed by Çanakkale with 10.1% and Balıkesir with 10.6%.

The proportion of the individuals who were married to their first cousins in last marriage within total legal marriages was 8.5%
According to the results of ABPRS; the proportion of the individuals aged 16 and above who were married to their first cousins in last marriage within total legal marriages was 8.5%. When the marriages between first cousins were analyzed by kind of kindredship; it was seen that 46.7% of them were married to paternal aunt/maternal uncle children, 27.2% were married to paternal uncle childen and 26.1% married to maternal aunt children.
Mardin was the province with the highest number of individuals married to their relatives
When the marriages between first cousins within total legal marriages were analyzed by provinces; the province with the highest proportion of the individuals aged 16 and above who were married to their first cousins in their last marriages within total married ones was Mardin with 20.8% in 2019. This province was followed by Şanlıurfa with 18.2% and Diyarbakır with 17.2%. The province with the lowest proportion of individuals who were married to their first cousins was Edirne with 1.1%. This province was followed by Kırklareli with 1.4% and Çanakkale with 2.1%.
The proportion of the marriages between first cousins were decreased
According to the results of marriage statistics; the proportion of the marriages between first cousins in total legal marriages realized in 2010 was 5.9%, this proportion was 5.0% in 2014 and 4.0% in 2019 by showing steady decline.

When the marriages between first cousins within legal marriages were analyzed by provinces; the province with the highest proportion of marriages between first cousins in total marriages realized in 2019 was Şanlıurfa with 14.9%. This province was followed by Siirt with 14.2% and Mardin with 13.9%. The province with the lowest proportion was Kırklareli with 0.5%, it was followed by Balıkesir and Edirne with 0.7%, Bolu with 0.8%.
The families of the individuals made them happiest
According to the results of life satisfaction survey, the proportion of the individuals aged 18 and over who stated that their families made them happiest was 74.1% in 2019. While the proportion of males who mentioned that their families made them happiest was 79.5%, this proportion was 68.8% for females. The proportion of males who mentioned that their children made them happiest was 7.4%, this proportion was 18.1% for females.
The proportion of children contributing to household chores was 45.5%
According to the results of Child Labour Force Survey IV.Quarter of 2019: October-December, 45.5% of children in the 5-17 age group contributed to their families in any of the household chores. This proportion was 40.0% for male and 51.3% for female. While 43.5% of the children helped their families with household chores in shopping for households, laundry-dishwashing, ironing, cooking, cleaning of household items, 23.2% of them assisted their family in caring for younger children in the household and 5.4% of them helped their family in caring for elderly/disabled/ill person in the household.
48.7% of the households had portable computer
According to the results of the survey on information and communication technology usage by individuals; 88.3% of the households had the opportunity to access to the Internet from home in 2019. This proportion was 7.0% in 2004. While the proportion of availability of portable computer as laptop, tablet, netbook in households was 0.9% in 2004, this proportion increased to 48.7% in 2019, while the proportion of availability of mobile phone/smart phone in households was 53.7% in 2004, it increased to 98.7% in 2019 and while the proportion of availability of smart television in households was 7.3% in 2013, it increased to 37.7% in 2019.

26.9% of the extended families were below the poverty threshold
According to the results of income and living conditions survey; when the poverty threshold was examined by taken equivalised household disposable income criteria 60.0% into consideration, it was seen that the proportion of the individuals who lived below the poverty threshold was 21.2% in 2018. When the poverty rate by household types was analyzed; it was observed that 12.8% of one person households, 20.2% of one-family households, 26.9% of extended-family households and 13.0% of multi-person no-family households lived below the relative poverty threshold.
Mean ideal number of children stated by females was 2.8
According to the results of 2018 Turkey Demographic and Health Survey, when how many children would females choose if it were possible that females had number of children in their whole life according to their pleasure was analyzed; it was seen that mean ideal number of children stated by females was 2.8.
When the ideal number of children was analyzed by Classification of Statistical Region Units Level 1; while the region with the highest mean ideal number of children stated was TRC Southeast Anatolia (Gaziantep, Adıyaman, Kilis, Şanlıurfa, Diyarbakır, Mardin, Batman, Şırnak, Siirt) with 3.6, the region with the lowest mean ideal number of children was TR2 West Marmara (Tekirdağ, Edirne, Kırklareli, Balıkesir, Çanakkale) with 2.4.
The number of children whose father died was 268 thousand 843
According to the results of ABPRS; it was seen that the number of children whose father died was 268 thousand 843, the number of children whose mother died was 81 thousand 239, the number of children whose both mother and father died was 4 thousand 649 within total 22 million 876 thousand 798 children in 2019. When it was analyzed by sex; the number of male children whose father died was 137 thousand 733, it was 131 thousand 110 for female children, the number of male children whose mother died was 41 thousand 400, it was 39 thousand 839 for female children, the number of male children whose both mother and father died was 2 thousand 394, it was 2 thousand 255 for female children.
Households allocated the highest share to housing and rent expenditures
According to the results of 2018 household budget survey; while the expenditures on housing and rent had the highest share in total consumption expenditures with a rate of 23.7%, expenditures on food and non-alcoholic beverages took the second place with 20.3% and expenditures on transportation took the third place with 18.3% in overall Turkey. The groups which had the lowest shares in total expenditures were the expenditures on health with the rate of 2.2%, educational services with the rate of 2.3% and entertainment and culture with the rate of 2.9%.

The proportion of the individuals who lived in their own house was 59.0%
According to the results of income and living conditions survey; when the ownership status of dwelling was examined in 2018; it was seen that 59.0% of the individuals were owner of the residing dwelling and 25.2% were tenant in their residence. It was observed that 39.6% of individuals faced with heating problem due to isolation, 36.2% of individuals faced with leaking roof, damp walls, rotten window frame problems etc. and 24.8% of them faced with air pollution, environmental pollution or other environmental problems caused by traffic or industry in 2018.

Turkish Statistical Institute has been published special publications or press releases since 2012 on special days and occasions considering the importance of such days. In this context, this press release has been prepared peculiarly for the Family Week on 15-21 May in 2020.
In the press release, basic statistics demonstrating the family structure of the country are presented. With the declaration of the General Assembly of the United Nations, the day of 15th May is celebrated as the International Day of Families since 1994. Each year, a specific theme is highlighted for this special day to protect and strengthen the structure of family. This year’s theme of International Day of Families is “Families in Development: Copenhagen & Beijing + 25”.
