Unemployment rate realized as 9.4%

The number of unemployed persons aged 15 years old and over decreased by 318 thousand to 3 million 264 thousand persons in 2023 compared to the previous year. The unemployment rate decreased by 1.0 percentage points to 9.4%. It was estimated at 7.7% for men and 12.6% for women.

Employment rate realized as 48.3%

Number of employed persons aged 15 years old and over realized as 31 million 632 thousand persons with 880 thousand persons increase and employment rate occurred as 48.3% with 0.8 percentage point increase in 2023 compared to the previous year. This rate was estimated at 65.7% for men and 31.3% for women.

Labour force participation rate realized as 53.3%

Labour force realized as 34 million 896 thousand persons with 562 thousand persons increase and labour force participation rate realized as 53.3% with 0.2 percentage point increase in 2023 compared to the previous year. The labour force participation rate was estimated 71.2% for men and 35.8% for women.

Youth unemployment rate was 17.4%

The youth unemployment rate in the 15-24 age group was 17.4% with 2.0 percentage point decrease compared to the previous year. While this rate was estimated 14.3% for men and 23.2% for women.

57.6% of total employment was in services sector

In 2023, 14.8% of total employment was employed in agriculture, 21.2% was employed in industry, 6.3% was employed in construction and 57.6% was employed in services sector. While the share of employed in services realized as 1.1 percentage point increase and the share of construction realized as 0.3 percentage point increase, the share of agriculture realized with 1.0 percentage point decrease and industry realized with 0.5 percentage point decrease compared to the previous year.

In 2023, 4 million 695 thousand persons were employed in agriculture, 6 million 711 thousand persons were employed in industry, 1 million 997 thousand persons were employed in construction and 18 million 230 thousand persons were employed in services. Compared with previous year, the number of employed in agriculture decreased 171 thousand persons, while industry increased 48 thousand persons, construction increased 151 thousand persons and services increased 852 thousand persons.

Labour underutilization rate realized as 22.8%

In 2023, the rate of composite measure of labour underutilization consisting of time-related underemployment, potential labour force and unemployment was 22.8% with 1.5 percentage point increase compared to the previous year. While combined rate of time-related underemployment and unemployment realized as 15.4%, combined rate of unemployment and potential labour force realized as 17.3%.

Supplementary labour force indicators, 2014-2023

TRB2 (Van, Muş, Bitlis, Hakkari) region had the highest unemployment rate

TRB2 (Van, Muş, Bitlis, Hakkari) region had the highest unemployment rate with 17.2% and TR82 (Kastamonu, Çankırı, Sinop) region had the lowest unemployment rate with 4.9%.

TR21 (Tekirdağ, Edirne, Kırklareli) region had the highest employment rate

TR21 (Tekirdağ, Edirne, Kırklareli) region had the highest employment rate with 54.5%. TRC3 (Mardin, Batman, Şırnak, Siirt) region had the lowest employment rate with 37.5%.

TR21 (Tekirdağ, Edirne, Kırklareli) region had the highest labour force participation rate

TR21 (Tekirdağ, Edirne, Kırklareli) region had the highest labour force participation rate with 59.0%. TRC3 (Mardin, Batman, Şırnak, Siirt) region had the lowest labour force participation rate with 42.3%.
