EMPLOYMENT AND UNEMPLOYMENT IN ITALY (PROVISIONAL ESTIMATES) – SEPTEMBER 2023
In September 2023 the number of both employed and unemployed people grew, while inactive persons dropped.
On a monthly basis, the increase of employment (+0.2%, +42 thousand) concerned men and all age groups with the exception of those aged 35-49, for whom a decrease was recorded, as well as for women. Overall, the employment rate rose to 61.7% (+0.1 p.p.).
In the last month, the growth in the number of unemployed persons (+1.9%, +35 thousand) involved only women – as the number of men fell – and all age groups. The unemployment rate increased to 7.4% (+0.1 p.p.), the youth rate declined to 21.9% (-0.1 p.p.).
In September, the drop in the number of inactive people aged 15 to 64 (-0.7%, -92 thousand) concerned both genders and all age groups. The inactivity rate fell to 33.2% (-0.2 p.p.).
In the period July-September 2023, with respect to the previous quarter (April-June 2023), employment increased (+0.3%, +80 thousand).
On a quarterly basis, a drop was registered for both unemployed persons (-1.9%, -36 thousand) and inactive people aged 15-64 years (-0.5%, -63 thousand).
Compared with September 2022, the number of employed persons rose by 2.2% (+512 thousand), the growth concerned both genders and all age groups except 35-49 years; the employment rate showed an increase of 1.4 p.p.
On a yearly basis, the rise of employed people was accompanied by a decrease of both unemployed (-5.1%, -101 thousand) and inactive persons aged 15-64 (-3.6%, -459 thousand).
