The Ministry of Trade published the “Report on the Outlook of e-Commerce in Türkiye”, which includes important developments in the field of e-commerce.The report analyzed the status of e-commerce in gross domestic product (GDP), general trade and retail trade.Accordingly, Türkiye’s e-commerce volume increased by 115.15 percent last year compared to the previous year, reaching 1.85 trillion liras. In the same period, the number of transactions increased by 22.25 percent to 5.87 billion transactions. e-Commerce volume is expected to reach 3.4 trillion liras and the number of transactions is expected to reach 6.67 billion transactions this year.

“WHITE GOODS AND SMALL HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCES” HAD THE BIGGEST SHARE

While the ratio of e-Commerce volume to the general trade volume was 10.1 percent in 2019, it reached 20.3 percent last year. The share of e-Commerce volume in GDP was 6.8 percent.

While 51 percent of the volume was composed of goods and 49 percent of the volume was composed of service trade, 63 percent of the card transaction volume originated from goods and 37 percent from service trade. The white goods and small household appliances sector had the largest share with 233 billion liras. This sector was followed by electronics with 135 billion liras and clothing, shoes and accessories with 127 billion liras.

76 PERCENT OF E-COMMERCE BUSINESSES ARE SOLE PROPRIETORSHIPS

With the methodology developed by the Ministry, an index was created regarding the adaptation of provinces in Türkiye to e-commerce. Accordingly, the provinces with the highest e-commerce compliance were Istanbul, Kayseri, Çorum, İzmir and Kocaeli.

The number of e-commerce businesses in Türkiye reached 559 thousand 412 as of last year. The number of businesses conducting e-commerce activities in marketplaces approached 540 thousand. The number of businesses registered in the Electronic Trade Information System (ETBIS), which are engaged in e-commerce activities from their own site or mobile application, exceeded 35 thousand.

Of the e-commerce businesses in the country, 76 percent were sole proprietorships, 21 percent were limited liability companies and 3 percent were joint stock companies. The provinces with the highest number of e-commerce businesses were Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Bursa and Antalya.

THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF TRANSACTIONS WAS MADE IN NOVEMBER LAST YEAR

It was determined that the majority of e-Commerce business owners were between the ages of 25-44. 70.5 percent of artisan business owners operating in this field were male and 29.5 percent were female entrepreneurs.

The busiest period in transaction volume last year was November, with the effect of campaigns. In the month in question, e-commerce volume was 50 percent above the monthly averages throughout the year. In this period, November 24, Teacher’s Day was recorded as one of the days with the highest transaction volume.

While 29-year-old consumers spent the most, the most shopping was done through mobile applications.
