According to data from the Agriculture and Forestry Ministry of Republic of Türkiye, Türkiye has placed first among European Union nations with an annual aquaculture production of 800,000 tons over the past three years.

In 2021, hunting contributed around 328,000 tons of this produce, and aquaculture contributed about 472,000 tons. The industry’s exports rose along with production. Last year, the nation exported 239,000 tons of aquaculture products worth about $1.4 billion, while importing 105,000 tons of aquaculture products worth about $217 million, making the nation a net exporter of aquaculture products worth $1.2 billion.

Türkiye came in top and second place worldwide for producing steelhead, bass, and beam fish, respectively.

The sector exported its goods to 106 countries last year, with 55% of all exports going to the EU, while Türkiye imported goods from 75 nations in 2021, primarily feeder fish and some locally produced mollusk species.

In total, Türkiye has 15,300 fishing boats, more than 1,600 of which are 12-meter-long or larger. In the EU member states, there are about 75,000 fishing boats, 11,000 of which are vessels longer than 12 meters, according to Eurostat.

In the last 20 years, the government has provided aquafarming with financial assistance and special consumption tax exemptions totaling 10.2 billion Turkish Liras.
Authorities have also assisted fisherman who catch predator toadfish since 2020.

The aquaculture industry received 936 million liras in subsidized loans in 2021; since 2002, the total value of these loans has been 13.9 billion liras.
