Expenditure on education as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP) was 5.8% in 2018 and 6.0% in 2019. Government expenditure on education as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP) was 4.3% in 2018 and 4.4% in 2019.
Largest expenditure amount was spent on tertiary education by public institutions
When education expenditures are evaluated according to service providers; Public institutions spent 30.3% of their total education expenditure for tertiary education, 24.9% of total for upper secondary education. The 38.4% of education expenditure spent by private institutions was for upper secondary education and 36.8% for tertiary education.
The 74.0% of education expenditure was paid by public sources
The 74.0% of education expenditure in Turkey in 2019 was spent by the public sources. The share of education expenditure by households was 20.8%.

When evaluated according to educational levels, the highest level of education expenditure per student in 2019 was for tertiary education with 18 thousand 830 TL.

Highest increase in education expenditure per student was observed at primary school
The total education expenditure per student was increased by 17.6%. The level of education which reached the highest increase in 2019 compared to 2018 about education expenditure by financing source was primary school with 30.1%. This was followed by lower secondary school with 25.1%.
