“The maritime sector holds immense importance within Malta’s economy, characterized by its diverse interests and clusters that necessitate a specialized approach. I am deeply inspired by the dedication displayed by industry professionals and the collaboration between Transport Malta and public entities. Our joint commitment aims to ensure a sustainable and competitive maritime industry while addressing climate change, citizen welfare, and visitor satisfaction.

Heading Transport Malta presents undeniable challenges, but the potential for growth and progress continues to motivate me. The three foundational pillars – Land and Road Transport, Maritime, and Civil Aviation – are essential to meet expectations and deliver excellence.

In the maritime realm, we actively explore new avenues for growth and diversification. Adhering to international agreements such as the IMO GHG Strategy, MED SOX ECA, the Fit for 55 Package, and the new Maritime Safety Package poses unique challenges that demand innovative solutions. Our core goal is to uphold these commitments while uncovering growth opportunities. Recently, the WestMED Maritime Initiative Member States reinforced their commitment by signing a Ministerial Declaration on June 23, 2023.

This declaration outlines crucial priorities for Malta’s maritime sector. Emphasizing sustainable production and consumption, innovative aquaculture and fisheries, coastal eco-tourism, maritime clusters, blue skills, ocean literacy, and youth empowerment, the declaration charts a comprehensive path toward a thriving and responsible maritime future. We also prioritize Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP), blue economy decarbonization, Marine Renewable Energy sectors, pollution mitigation, marine biodiversity preservation, technology transfer, coastal resilience, and maritime security.

Situated at the Mediterranean’s heart and on the EU’s maritime border periphery, Malta faces competition from non-EU neighbors. Addressing industry fragmentation and prioritizing this sector at the policy level are crucial. My commitment is to promote and support Malta’s maritime potential, benefiting all stakeholders.

In conclusion, Malta’s maritime industry can thrive with a commitment to sustainability and competitiveness. As CEO of Transport Malta, I am dedicated to steering the maritime sector’s future, fostering collaboration, upholding governance, and unlocking new horizons of success for our nation.

By embracing challenges as opportunities, we can elevate Malta’s maritime industry, setting an example for the global maritime community. Together, we’ll sail toward a brighter, sustainable maritime future for Malta and beyond.”
