By 2025, the public-private effort intends to boost the share of environmentally friendly automobiles to 50%. Currently, electric rechargeable vehicles account for 25.5 percent of all vehicles on Swiss roads.

In the next three years, the consortium promises to raise the number of public charging stations from 7,150 to 20,000.

The 59 private and public sector organizations will also investigate how to effectively construct a nationwide electric vehicle charging network at service stations, homes, workplaces, and on the road.

Mobility and electric automobiles were mentioned in the government’s proposed new environment law, which was unveiled in December and aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030 compared to 1990 levels.

The government aims to enforce a tougher CO2 emissions limit for automobiles under the new law, in accordance with EU regulations, and penalize car importers who fail to meet the new objectives. Last year, electric or hybrid vehicles accounted for more than a quarter of all new automobiles delivered in Switzerland.
