The most recent data on Portuguese income, when compared to earnings of citizens of other European Union (EU) Member States, are stark, especially given their level of education. Workers with a secondary education in 12 countries or a basic education in four EU countries earn more than Portuguese with a higher education on average.

According to a Pblico report based on National Statistics Institute (INE) data, those with a basic education saw their salary increase by 5% between 2011 and 2019. Those with a secondary education saw their earnings fall by 3%. In the case of higher education, salaries were reduced by 11%.

Eurostat confirmed these figures: between 2010 and 2020, the average annual income of Portuguese with higher education fell by 6.5 percent, or 1,422 euros, falling from around 21,900 euros to 20,476 euros. Those with a basic education saw their average income rise by 11%, or up to 1,171 euros, from 10,270 to 11,441 euros per year. Portuguese with secondary education, on the other hand, saw a 5% increase, or around 703 euros, with their annual salary rising from 13,513 to 14,216 euros.
