In March 2023 compared with February 2023, seasonally adjusted production in the construction sector decreased by 2.4% in the euro area and by 1.9% the EU, according to first estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In February 2023, production in construction rose by 1.7% in the euro area and by 1.4% in the EU.

In March 2023 compared with March 2022, production in construction decreased by 1.5% in the euro area and by 1.2% in the EU.

Monthly comparison by construction sector and by Member State

In the euro area in March 2023, compared with February 2023, building construction decreased by 2.4% and civil engineering by 2.3%.

In the EU, civil engineering decreased by 2.3% and building construction by 1.8%. Among Member States for which data are available, the largest monthly decreases in production in construction
were recorded in Austria (-10.9%), Slovakia (-10.3%) and Germany (-4.6%). The highest increases were observed in Romania (+4.1%), Slovenia (+3.2%) and Portugal (+1.6%).

Annual comparison by construction sector and by Member State

In the euro area in March 2023, compared with March 2022, civil engineering decreased by 2.2% and building construction by 1.3%.

In the EU civil engineering decreased by 1.8% and building construction by 1.2%. Among Member States for which data are available, the largest annual decreases in production in construction
were observed in Slovakia (-10.3%), Hungary (-9.8%) and Czechia (-6.1%). The highest increases were recorded in Slovenia (+28.3%), Romania (+17.7%) and the Netherlands (+4.2%).
