Manufacturing Industry Water, Wastewater and Waste Statistics, 2018 in Turkey
Manufacturing industry establishments abstracted 2.9 billion m3 of water
According to the result of the Manufacturing Industry Water, Wastewater and Waste Statistics Survey, which was applied to the establishments with 50 or more employees in local units, 2.9 billion m3 of water was abstracted by manufacturing industry establishments in 2018. Out of this amount 71.2% was abstracted from sea, 15.5% from spring and well, 4.8% from organized industrial zone water supply network, 3.6% from dam, 1.5% from municipal water supply network, 1.4% from river and 2% from other water resources. 76% of the abstracted water was used for cooling purposes.
Manufacturing industry establishments discharged 2.4 billion m3 of wastewater
Manufacturing industry establishments discharged 2.4 billion m3 of wastewater in 2018. 80.8% of discharged wastewater was cooling water. Out of total discharged wastewater, 81.3% was discharged to sea, 6.8% to river, 6.8% to organized industrial zone sewerage, 2.6% to municipal sewerage and 2.5% to other receiving bodies.
Excluding cooling water, 54.6% of discharged wastewater was treated
Out of 2 billion m3 of discharged cooling water, 1.1% was treated, whereas out of 466 million m3 of wastewater which was not cooling water, 54.6% was treated and discharged to receiving bodies.
22.9 million tonnes of waste was generated by manufacturing industry establishments
In 2018, 22.9 million tonnes of total waste, of which 3.7 million tonnes was hazardous, was generated by manufacturing industry establishments. Out of total waste, 57.3% was sold or sent to licensed waste treatment facilities, 21% was landfilled, 9.2% was recovered within the facility, 5.5% was stored within the establishment site, 4.5% was collected by municipalities or organized industrial zone’s managements, 2% was co-incinerated or incinerated and 0.5% was disposed of by other methods.
Regarding the sectors, it is determined that 71.2% of total waste generated, 80.4% of abstracted water and 83.2% of discharged wastewater were constituted by manufacture of basic metals and chemicals production industries.
