Turkey’s health tourism industry generated $4 billion in revenue last year through cosmetic surgery, hair transplants, dentistry, and general health services, according to a statement from the Service Exporters’ Association. The industry’s revenues dipped slightly in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the sector’s activity began to recover in March 2023. The association aims to generate record revenue this year and has proposed stricter inspections to prevent unfair competition, including non-medical professionals performing hair transplant operations at hospitals. It also called for more support from the Türkiye Tourism Promotion and Development Agency (TGA) for the health tourism sector, and suggested that medical schools include hair transplant classes in their curriculum for nurses and anesthetists. Over 90% of the more than 2,000 establishments performing hair transplant operations in Turkey operate as “under the counter” businesses that offer low-quality service and offer such operations at cheaper prices.
