Tourism Satellite Accounts: quarterly tourism labour statistics, Australia, experimental estimates

In September quarter 2022, there were 604,200 tourism jobs: This was:

  • 18,600 (3.2%) more jobs compared to the June quarter 2022
  • 223,500 (58.7%) more jobs compared to the September quarter 2021
  • 1 in 24 (4.1%) filled jobs in the economy

During this quarter, industries with the largest quarterly changes were:

  • cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services: increase of 8,400 jobs (4.1%)
  • travel agency and information centre services: increase of 5,700 (18.8%)
  • clubs, pubs, taverns and bars: increase of 5,200 jobs (12.2%)
  • accommodation: decrease of 1,400 jobs (-1.5%)

Comparing September quarter 2021 with September quarter 2022, industries with the largest changes were:

  • cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services: increase of 78,900 jobs (58.6%)
  • accommodation: increase of 37,600 jobs (72.6%)
  • education and training: increase of 24,900 jobs (up 778.1% from 3,200 jobs)
  • sports and recreation services: increase of 19,000 jobs (133.8%)
  • clubs, pubs, taverns and bars: increase of 17,600 jobs (58.5%)

During this quarter:

  • full-time jobs increased 2.6% while part-time jobs increased 3.8%

Between September quarter 2021 and September quarter 2022:

  • full-time jobs increased 65.3% while part-time jobs increased 52.7%

During this quarter:

  • jobs filled by females increased for both full-time (3.1%) and part-time (4.9%)
  • jobs filled by males increased for both full-time (2.2%) and part-time (1.6%)

From September quarter 2021 to September quarter 2022:

  • jobs filled by females increased for both full-time (93.4%) and part-time (58.4%)
  • jobs filled by males increased for both full-time (46.2%) and part-time jobs (43.2%)

Measuring the impacts of COVID-19 on tourism activity

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to have an impact on the Australian tourism sector. This section looks at how tourism has been impacted over the period by comparing estimates of tourism jobs at the end of December quarter 2019 with those in the current quarter. The key points are:

  • Tourism jobs peaked at 758,000 in December quarter 2019, and in September quarter 2022 is now at its highest level (604,200) since the pandemic started.
  • This represents -20.3% (-153,800) less tourism jobs than the December quarter 2019 compared to an increase of 4.0% (573,000) more jobs in the whole economy.
