In the 18 EU member states for which data are available, there were budget deficits. There were five nations with budget surpluses: Denmark (+0.1%), Lithuania (+0.3%), Portugal (+0.9%), Luxembourg (+1.7%), and Ireland (+2.5%). In Q1 2022 Latvia’s general government budget deficit ratio to GDP was higher than the average in the European Union, according to data published by Eurostat.

The countries with the largest budget deficits were Malta (+8%), Hungary (-69%), Romania (-58%) and Belgium (-5.2 percent ).

The general government budget deficit as a percentage of GDP in Estonia was 1.3 percent.

The seasonally adjusted general government deficit in the EU and the Eurozone in Q1 2022 was 2.2 and 2.3 percent of GDP, respectively.
