Employees in Germany Spend 17% of Their Working Time Working from Home

Employees in Germany spend an average of 17% of their working time working from home. “The extent of home working has not changed from the previous year,” says ifo researcher Jean-Victor Alipour. “This may come as a surprise in light of the debate around returning to the office. Yet the result tallies with other data that confirms that working from home is by no means on the decline.”

The average figures hide large differences between industries. Working from home is particularly widespread in the IT sector (58% of working hours) and in management consultancies (50%). In contrast, employees in the construction and catering sectors only spend 2% of their working time working from home. This compares to 10% of working hours in industry.

The proportion of employees working from home is currently 23.4%, only slightly down on the February figure (24.1%). “Stricter rules don’t necessarily mean less working from home,” explains Alipour. “This is because employers’ offers are primarily aimed at coordinating attendance times in order to strengthen personal contact.”

Working from home is particularly common in large companies. Employees there spend 20% of their working time at home. In contrast, the proportion in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is only 15%.

The results are based on the ifo Business Survey of around 9000 companies in Germany.
