The Hungarian Central Statistical Office’s data revealed that in January, retail sales in Hungary fell for the second consecutive month.
After declining by 4.1 percent in December, the amount of retail sales decreased by 4.5 percent annually when working days were adjusted in January.
Additionally, sales fell at the steepest pace since February 2021, when they fell 5.5 percent.
Sales of non-food items dropped 1.5% in January, while sales of food, beverages, and tobacco fell 4.8% annually. Fuel sales for automobiles fell by 9.7%.
After increasing by 4.8 percent the month before, the number of retail sales decreased by 3.9 percent on an unadjusted basis in January.
The agency reported that at the beginning of the year, the volume of mail-order and internet retailing, which made up 8.6% of all retail sales and involved a broad range of goods, decreased 7.6% annually.
