Companies Attract Skilled Workers with Flexible Working Hours Rather than Higher Salaries

A good three quarters of companies offer flexible working hours as an argument in job ads, according to the latest Personnel Manager Survey by Randstad and the ifo Institute. “In view of the shortage of labor and skilled workers, companies must be attractive to applicants. Flexible working hours play a key role in this,” says ifo researcher Daria Schaller. Service providers in particular (78%) focus on flexible working hours. In retail, the figure is 72%. Large companies offer this option somewhat more frequently than small companies.

To create additional incentives, 68% also offer further training. The figure is 85% for large companies and 58% for small companies. Additional offers such as a commuter ticket, a canteen or sports follow in third place with 60%. As many as 89% of large companies offer these options. Among small companies, the figure is only 37%. Around a third of companies offer a flexible place of work (34%). Retailers are less likely to be able to offer this option (20%) than manufacturing (35%) or service providers (39%). 32% of the companies are committed to above-average pay. To date, the options of taking a sabbatical (12%), having a four-day week (11%) or a workation (5%) play a subordinate role.
