Up by 2.9% in the euro area and by 3.3% in the EU compared with January 2024

Overview

In January 2025, compared with December 2024, seasonally adjusted services production increased by 0.4% in the euro area and by 0.3% in the EU, according to first estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In December 2024, services production fell by 0.2% in the euro area and grew by 0.3% in the EU.

In January 2025, compared with January 2024, services production increased by 2.9% in the euro area and by 3.3% in the EU.

Monthly comparison by service industry and by Member State

In the euro area in January 2025, compared with December 2024, services production

  • increased for transportation and storage by 0.4%,

  • increased for accommodation and food services by 0.1%,

  • increased for information and communication by 0.5%,

  • increased for real estate activities by 1.7%,

  • decreased for professional, scientific and technical activities by 0.4%,

  • decreased for administrative and support services by 0.2%.

In the EU, services production

  • decreased for transportation and storage by 0.5%,

  • increased for accommodation and food services by 0.1%,

  • increased for information and communication by 1.1%,

  • increased for real estate activities by 1.8%,

  • remained stable for professional, scientific and technical activities,

  • decreased for administrative and support services by 0.1%.

Among Member States for which data are available, the highest monthly increases were recorded in Austria (+3.1%), Belgium, Bulgaria and Latvia (all three +3.0%).The largest decreases were observed in Denmark (-8.4%), Slovakia (-4.3%) and Slovenia (-2.6%).

In the euro area in January 2025, compared with January 2024, services production

  • increased for transportation and storage by 4.5%,

  • increased for accommodation and food services by 0.9%,

  • increased for information and communication by 4.8%,

  • increased for real estate activities by 2.2%,

  • increased for professional, scientific and technical activities by 1.7%,

  • increased for administrative and support services by 0.8%.

In the EU, services production

  • increased for transportation and storage by 5.7%,

  • increased for accommodation and food services by 1.2%,

  • increased for information and communication by 5.4%,

  • increased for real estate activities by 1.9%,

  • increased for professional, scientific and technical activities by 1.9%,

  • increased for administrative and support services by 1.1%.

Among Member States for which data are available, the highest annual increases were recorded in Denmark (+16.0%), Estonia (+10.5%) and Greece (+10.1%). The only decrease was observed in Slovenia (-1.7%).
