After passing Sweden in recent weeks, the Netherlands now has the highest gas prices in Europe, according to research from the website Energievergelijk.nl. The study is based on data from the Household Energy Price Index, which was created by the regulators in Austria and Hungary and compares costs across 33 nations. Current gas prices in the Netherlands for customers with new contracts are 28.32 cents per kilowatt hour, or €2.76 per cubic meter with tax, which is twice the European average of 13.5 cents.

Coal, nuclear, and hydroelectric power make up much more of the energy mix in several EU countries. The website notes that certain EU nations have also enacted price restrictions or unique subsidies for households with low incomes. Low-income households are granted a 30% bill cut in Belgium, for instance. France has a maximum charge and is renationalizing EDF. The Netherlands has reduced value-added tax on energy bills and provided low-income families with compensation packages.

A standard shopping basket now costs 18.5 percent more than it did 11 months ago, according to GFK retail experts. According to GFK, prices for things like pasta, kitchen paper, and bread have increased well above average while those for things like chocolate, bananas, and cleaning supplies have barely altered.
