In Austria, there is a growing adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) among enterprises. A survey conducted by Statistics Austria on the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in businesses reveals that in 2023, 11% of enterprises utilize AI technologies, compared to 9% two years ago.
Tobias Thomas, Director General of Statistics Austria, notes, “The rapid development of artificial intelligence is gradually making its way into Austrian companies. Currently, 11% of enterprises in Austria employ artificial intelligence, signifying a 2% increase since 2021. Back then, Austria’s 9% AI adoption was in line with the EU average. Large companies, especially those with over 250 employees, are at the forefront of AI integration into their operations.”
Enterprise size significantly influences AI utilization. Larger companies are more likely to adopt AI technologies. Specifically, 9% of small businesses (10 to 49 employees), 17% of medium-sized enterprises (50 to 249 employees), and 35% of large enterprises (250 or more employees) use intelligent technologies.
The sector of the economy plays a relatively minor role in AI adoption. Both the production sector (9%) and the service sector (12%) incorporate AI technologies. However, disparities exist among different economic branches. AI systems are most prevalent in the information and communication sector (37%) and least common in construction and accommodation and foodservice activities (each at 4%).
Among enterprises utilizing AI, more than half (54%) apply AI primarily for text mining, 43% use AI for data analysis based on machine learning, and 32% employ AI for process automation or assisted decision-making. The service sector sees more significant use of these AI technologies compared to the production sector.
While the adoption of AI is on the rise within Austrian businesses, the majority (88%) have not yet embraced it. For enterprises that have considered AI but not implemented it, reasons cited include a lack of expertise (7%), legal uncertainties related to AI use, compatibility issues with existing equipment, and challenges related to the availability or quality of necessary data.
