A total of 38 million people in Europe lack the financial means to take a week’s vacation despite working; this number accounts for 27% of working Bulgarians, or 840,000 people. Data from a study by the European Confederation of Trade Unions, according to CITU, demonstrate this. Additionally, disparities increase in the types of vacations.
The biggest percentage of workers who cannot afford even a week’s vacation is found in Romania, Greece, and Lithuania, with 47, 43, and 41%, respectively.
More and more people are reporting that they are having trouble making ends meet and that vacationing is an even more luxurious indulgence that they cannot afford as a result of the crisis and growing costs.
The proportion of workers who lack the means to take a summer vacation has risen since 2019 in 11 of the member states.
Approximately 22 percent of Bulgarian workers could not afford a holiday in 2019, and that number rose to 27 percent a year later, per the data.
To end poverty, the European Confederation of Trade Unions demands immediate action. According to union experts, inflation will likely cause the downward trend to worsen much further.
In order to lower the number of working poor in our nation, they have already requested the National Security Council approve a new raise in the minimum wage to BGN 800 (EUR 409) beginning this fall.
