Turnover from the sale of goods after two years of growth lower in Slovenia

After two years of growth, turnover from the sale of goods declined last year. It declined in wholesale and grew in retail trade. In total, it amounted to EUR 35.1 billion, which is 1.3% less than a year earlier.

Turnover lower in wholesale and higher in retail trade

Wholesale turnover amounted to EUR 19.5 billion and was 3.6% lower than in 2022. Nevertheless, it was the second highest since it started to be monitored. Retail trade turnover amounted to EUR 15.6 billion and was 1.9% higher than in 2022.

Substantial decline of turnover from the sale of fuels in wholesale trade

The sales of solid, liquid and gaseous fuels contributed the most to lower turnover in wholesale. Turnover from the sale of fuels amounted to EUR 1.6 billion and declined by 29.7% (or EUR 0.7 billion) compared to 2022. Lower turnover was mostly related to lower prices of fuels. In the previous year it reached the highest growth, by EUR 1.1 billion.

In the other three major commodity groups in wholesale, turnover was similar to the previous year. In the non-food products commodity group, which represents the largest share of turnover in wholesale, turnover declined by 1.0% and amounted to EUR 11.3 billion. Turnover from the sale of food, beverages and tobacco increased by 1.2%, to EUR 3.0 billion. Turnover from the sale of motor vehicles and other transport equipment also increased slightly, i.e. by 0.4%, amounting to EUR 3.6 billion.

Motor vehicles with the highest growth in retail trade

In retail trade, among the four major commodity groups, the highest turnover growth was observed in motor vehicles (by 30.7%). Turnover amounted to EUR 2.4 billion, which is the highest value so far, but quite close to the level of turnover from 2018. Sales of food, beverages and tobacco increased by 8.2% reaching EUR 4.9 billion.

Turnover from the sale of non-food products, which made up 41.3% of total retail trade turnover, amounted to EUR 6.5 billion or 1.6% less than in the previous year. The commodity group with the highest turnover among non-food products was medicines, medical products and devices (EUR 1.1 billion).

In retail trade, turnover from the sale of fuels declined the most. It amounted to EUR 1.8 billion or 23.8% less than the year before, when it was EUR 2.3 billion.
