Türkiye’s 2022 International Service Trade: Exports Reach $47.6 Billion, Imports at $35.2 Billion

According to International Trade in Services Statistics (travel excluded), while services exports were 34.7 billion dollars in 2021, it increased by 37% to 47.6 billion dollars in 2022. While service imports were 28.1 billion dollars in 2021, it increased by 25.6% in 2022 to 35.2 billion dollars.

According to the Extended Balance of Payments Services Classification, while the share of transport in total exports was 69.1% in 2021, it was 74.3% in 2022. The “other business services” was ranked at the second with 10.2% in 2021 and 8.4% in 2022. “Telecommunication, computer and information services” was the third with the share of 6.2% in 2022.

While services exports in transport, which had the highest share in total service exports, was 24 billion 6 million dollars in 2021, it was increased to 35 billion 348 million dollars by 47.2% in 2022. Telecommunication, computer and information services exports increased by 14.2% compared to the previous year and reached to 2 billion 958 million dollars.

The share of transport in total imports was 38.8% in 2021 while it was 46.3% in 2022. The “other business services” was ranked at the second with 21.4% in 2021 and 19.4% in 2022. “Telecommunication, computer and information services” was the third with the share of 10.0% in 2022.

Services exports to the European Union in 2022 were 18 billion 814 million dollars, while exports to other European countries were 6 billion 682 million dollars. Imports from the European Union were 15 billion 171 million dollars, and from other European countries were 3 billion 807 million dollars in 2022.

European Union became the leading group of countries in Türkiye’s exports and imports of services. European Union ranked first with the share of 39.5% in 2022 in terms of services exports; and the first in services imports with 43.1% in 2022.

In 2022, 28.4% of total exports were performed with Germany, the USA and the United Kingdom. Germany took the first place for services exports with 5 billion 847 million dollars with the share of 12.3%, the USA ranked second with the share of 10.3% and the United Kingdom ranked third with the share of 5.8% in 2022.

The top country for Türkiye’s services imports was Ireland with the share of 8.7% and 3 billion 78 million dollars in 2022. Germany ranked second with the share of 7.9% and 2 billion 787 million dollars, and the USA ranked third with the share of 7.9% and 2 billion 772 million dollars in 2022.

International trade in services (ITS) is the service trade between resident and non-resident natural or legal persons.

Travel (tourist services) is a sub-title of International Service Trade Statistics, but it is not included in the statistics presented in this press release. Travel services export and import values compiled by TurkStat within the scope of tourism statistics are included in the Balance of Payments Statistics of the Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye.

Extended Balance of Payments Services Classification (EBOPS) which was in the Statistical Classifications Regulation published in the official newspaper No. 31022 (repeated) is used in ITSS.

National geographical classification produced in accordance with the European Union geographical classification codes, called Geonomenclature, was used as country group classification.
