Istanbul Airport is on track to become one of the world’s top five airports within four years, with passenger numbers projected to exceed 100 million, according to Kadri Samsunlu, the CEO of İGA. While airlines in Europe continue to grapple with the pandemic’s repercussions, Istanbul Airport is expected to surpass pre-pandemic passenger levels by 10%, reaching 75 million passengers this year.
During the January to August period of 2023, the airport witnessed a remarkable 24% growth in total passenger traffic compared to the previous year, totaling nearly 51 million passengers. International passengers saw a 26% increase, reaching 38.4 million, while domestic passengers reached 12.5 million, marking a 17% increase.
Samsunlu stated, “According to our plans, the number of passengers at Istanbul Airport will exceed 100 million within four years, securing a spot among the world’s top 5 airports.”
The airport serves travelers from 130 countries, and in contrast to a decade ago, transit passengers now make up 35 to 40 percent of the total passenger count, according to Samsunlu. He credited their resilience to the government’s effective coordination with sector stakeholders during the pandemic.
