Venture capital markets in Bulgaria, Romania, and Hungary, often overlooked due to their smaller economies, are attracting interest from angel investors. These markets are considered “immature” compared to Western regions, with less standardized venture investment stages and less sophisticated funds. The fragmented nature of these economies poses challenges, but it also presents unique opportunities, as there is a demand for capital among small companies, and few angel investors are active in the region. Venture capital investment in Central and Eastern Europe reached a record high in 2022, primarily in information and communication technology. Investors see potential in sectors like cybersecurity, where regional companies can compete internationally. Despite challenges like corruption perception and weak regulatory systems, venture capital investment in the region is on the rise, signaling a positive transformation.
