Euro area

The first estimate for euro area exports of goods to the rest of the world in April 2023 was €216.0 billion, a decrease of 3.6% compared with April 2022 (€224.1 bn). Imports from the rest of the world stood at €227.7 bn, a fall of 11.9% compared with April 2022 (€258.6 bn). As a result, the euro area recorded a €11.7 bn deficit in trade in goods with the rest of the world in April 2023, compared with -€34.5 bn in April 2022. Intra-euro area trade fell to €208.3 bn in April 2023, down by 5.2% compared with April 2022.,

In January to April 2023, euro area exports of goods to the rest of the world rose to €940.0 bn (an increase of 5.4% compared with January-April 2022), and imports fell to €957.2 bn (a decrease of 2.9% compared with January-April 2022). As a result the euro area recorded a deficit of €-17.2 bn, compared with -€94.2 bn in January-April 2022. Intra-euro area trade rose to €910.1 bn in January-April 2023, up by 4.3% compared with January-April 2022.

European Union

The first estimate for extra-EU exports of goods in April 2023 was €192.1 billion, down by 3.5% compared with April 2022 (€199.0 bn). Imports from the rest of the world stood at €206.1 bn, down by 15.4% compared with April 2022 (€243.5 bn). As a result, the EU recorded a €14.1 bn deficit in trade in goods with the rest of the world in April 2023, compared with -€44.5 bn in April 2022. Intra-EU trade fell to €324.1 bn in April 2023, -3.6% compared with April 2022.

In January to April 2023, extra-EU exports of goods rose to €841.2 bn (an increase of 6.2% compared with January-April 2022), and imports fell to €868.1 bn (a decrease of 5.7% compared with January-April 2022). As a result, the EU recorded a deficit of €26.9 bn, compared with -€128.6 bn in January-April 2022. Intra-EU trade rose to €1 407.9 bn in January-April 2023, +5.0% compared with January-April 2022.
