Unemployment rate in Türkiye estimated 10.2% with 0.1 percentage point increase in April 2023 compared to the previous month

Since the Household Labour Force Survey for February and March could not be carried out in some provinces due to the earthquake disaster in our country, the results in the relevant press releases were calculated by weighting the provinces in which surveys could be conducted to give estimates on the basis of Türkiye. The survey application for April could be applied throughout the country including the provinces affected by the earthquake, therefore standard weighting process was carried out. At the same time; in order to reflect the earthquake effect on the indicators for February and March, an additional survey was conducted and the final results which were not adjusted and seasonally and calendar adjusted were recalculated and revised in the relevant tables retrospectively.

According to Household Labour Force Survey; the number of unemployed persons aged 15 years old and over increased by 74 thousand to 3 million 585 thousand persons in April 2023 compared to the previous month. As the unemployment rate estimated 10.2% with 0.1 percentage point increase compared to the previous month; it was estimated 8.1% for men and 14.3% for women.

The number of employed persons increased by 521 thousand to 31 million 610 thousand persons in April 2023 compared to the previous month. The employment rate occurred as 48.4% with 0.8 percentage point increase. In addition, this rate was 65.9% for men, 31.2% for women.

The number of persons in the labour force realized as 35 million 195 thousand persons with 594 thousand persons increase in April 2023 compared to the previous month. Labour force participation rate was 53.9% with 0.9 percentage point increase. Also this rate was 71.7% for men, it was 36.4% for women.

Seasonally adjusted youth unemployment rate was 19.1%

The youth unemployment rate in the 15-24 age group was 19.1% with 1.2 percentage point decrease compared to the previous month. While this rate was estimated 15.7% for men and 25.4% for women.

Seasonally and calendar adjusted average weekly actual working hours of persons at work during the reference period estimated 44.4 hours with 0.2 hours decrease compared to the previous month in April 2023.

In April 2023, the rate of composite measure of labour underutilization consisting of time-related underemployment, potential labour force and unemployment was 23.8% with 1.7 percentage point increase compared to the previous month. While combined rate of time-related underemployment and unemployment realized as 17.1%, combined rate of unemployment and potential labour force estimated as 17.5%.
