In December 2022, the volume of services in Brazil grew by 3.1% compared to November, in the seasonally adjusted series. As a result, the service sector was 14.4% above the level of February 2020 and reached a record level in the time series, started in 2011.

Compared to December 2021, the sector had its 22nd consecutive positive rate, advancing 6.0%. The volume of services accumulated an increase of 8.3% in 2022. The cumulative index in 12 months decelerated, down from 8.7% in November to 8.3% in December 2022, the lowest result since October 2021 (8.1% ).

The increase of 3.1% in the volume of services from November to December 2022 included four of the five activities surveyed, with a highlight to other services (10.3%). The former accumulates the second consecutive result (3.1%), whereas the second eliminates the loss recorded in November (-3.3%).

The other advances came from professional, administrative and complementary services (3.0%) and from services rendered to families (2.4%), with the former recording the second positive result in a row, with a cumulative gain of 3.6%; and the latter eliminating the cumulative losses in the October-November period (-1.8%).

Among the negative results, information and communication services fall for the second consecutive month (-2.2%), accumulating a -2.9% loss in the period, after a sequence of four positive rates (between July and October), a period in which it had accumulated a gain of 5.1%.

The quarterly moving average grew (0.7%) in the quarter ended in December 2022 against the previous month. Among the sectors there was predominance of positive rates, with four of the five activities expanding:  other services (3.3%); professional, administrative ans complementary services (1.1%); Transportation (0.5%) and services rendered to families (0.2%). On the other hand, information and communication (-0.6%) had the only retraction in the month.

In comparison with December 2021, the volume of services advanced 6.0%, setting the 22nd positive rate in a row, with expansion in four of the five activities and stability in one. There was growth in 57.8% of the 166 types of services surveyed.

Among the sectors, transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (10.2%) accounted for the main positive contribution on the total volume of services.  The other advances were those of professional, administrative and complementary services (7.4%); other services (10.1%) and of services rendered to families (9.2%). Information and communication services recorded null change (0.0%) in the index.

As for the cumulative index from January to December 2022, against the same period a year ago, the services sector expanded 8.3%, with positive rates in four out of five dissemination activities and an increase in 62.7% of the 166 types of services investigated.

The most relevant positive contribution was that of transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (13.3%). The other advances came from professional, administrative and complementary services (7.7%); services rendered to families (24.0%) and information and communication services  (3.3%).

On the other hand, the sector of other services (-2.1%) recorded the only negative rate in the cumulative indicator in the year.

Services grew in 22 of 27 Federation Units in December

Against November, there were increases in 22 of the 27.1 Federation Units, following the increase (3%) observed in Brazil.  Rio de Janeiro (5.0%) accounted for the most relevant impact, followed by São Paulo (0.8%), Minas Gerais (4.6%) and Federal District (13.4%).

On the other hand, Espírito Santo (-4.4%) exerted the major negative contribution of the month, followed by Piauí (-4.0%), Acre (-3.8%), Rondônia (-1.3%) and Amapá (-0.2%).

Against December 2021, the advance of services in Brazil (6.0%) was registered in 22 of the 27 Federation Units.  The main positive contribution came from São Paulo (3.7%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (11.8%), Minas Gerais (11.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (8.2%), Mato Grosso (21.7%) and Paraná (4.2%).

Conversely, Mato Grosso do Sul (-1.6%), Rio Grande do Norte (-1.1%), Acre (-5.3%), Piauí (-0.7%) and Rondônia (-0.4%) had the only negative results of the month.

In the cumulative result for the year, the increase in the volume of services in Brazil (8.3%) occurred in 26 Federation Units.  São Paulo accounted for the main positive impact (9.7%), followed by Minas Gerais (11.2%), Rio de Janeiro (4.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (11.3%), Pernambuco (11.2%), Paraná (4.4%) and Mato Grosso (13.8%).   The Federal District was the only FU to accumulate a negative rate (-1.6%).

Tourism activities grew 4.1% in December and 29.9% in 2022

In December 2022, the index of tourism activities grew 4.1% over the previous month, second non-negative result in a row, as it recorded stability in the previous month. As a result, the segment is 1.5% above the level of February 2020 (pre-pandemic) and 5.5% below the highest figure in the series, reached in February 2014.

There were highs in 11 of the 12 areas surveyed. The most relevant positive influence came from São Paulo (3.1%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (6.1%), Minas Gerais (7.2%) and the Federal District (17.9%). The only negative result was that of Rios Grande do Sul (-3.7%)

Comparing December 2022 with December 2021, the volume of tourism activities in Brazil grew 12.6%, the 21st positive rate in a row. There were highs in 11 of the 12 Federation Units in which the indicator is measured, with São Paulo (12.6%) as a highlight,  followed by Minas Gerais (30.2%),  Rio de Janeiro (13.9%), Paraná (12.3%) and Santa Catarina (15.6%). Conversely, Pernambuco (-4.0%) recorded the only negative result.

In the cumulative index in the yearthe special aggregate of tourism activities advanced 29.9%. There were high in the 12 places surveyed. Highlights to São Paulo (36%), followed by Minas Gerais (49.4%), Rio de Janeiro (16.1%), Rio Grande do Sul (35.8%) and Bahia (23.4%).

Passenger transportation grows 7.1% in December and accumulated high of 29.1% in the year

In December 2022, the volume of passengers transported in Brazil increased by 7.1% against the previous month, in the seasonally-adjusted series, and reaching a cumulative increase of 11.1% in the last two months of the year. Thus, the segment is 5.4% above the pre-pandemic level (February 2020) and 18.2% below the peak of the time series (February 2014).

In the cumulative index of the year, the sector showed expansion of 29.2% over the same period of 2021.

Cargo Transportation grows 1.4% in December, recording high of 15% in 2022

In December 2022, the volume of cargo transportation indicated expansion of 1.4% in December 2022, accumulating gains of 2.7% in the November-December period. Thus, the segment is 0.6% below the peak of the series, reached  in August 2022.  In comparison with the pre-pandemic level, cargo transportation is 33.4% above that of February 2020.

In the cumulative index of the year, the segment advanced 15.0% over the same period of 2021.
