Structural business statistics, 2021 of North Macedonia – preliminary data

According to the preliminary data of the State Statistical Office, 66 182 enterprises engaged in market activities in industry, construction, trade and other services activities1) in 2021 generated 1 627 737 million denars of turnover and 336 602 million denars of value added. For covering personnel costs of 441 734 employees, the observed enterprises spent 174 560 million denars.

The biggest share of turnover was generated in the Wholesale and retail trade sector (39.4%), followed by enterprises in the Manufacturing sector (26.9%), Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (8.2%), Construction sector (6.4%) and the Transport and storage sector (5.2%).

The Manufacturing sector contributed to value added generation the most (27.1%), followed by the Trade sector (23.0%). The Construction sector and Communication and information sector had a significant share in the total value added, generated by 8.7%, each.

In terms of enterprise size, micro-enterprises with less than 10 employees were dominant (90.9%), the majority of them in the Trade sector. With 35.1% of the total employees engaged, they created 22.1% of the total value added. Large enterprises, with a share of only 0.2% and engaging 24.1% of the employed, created 31.0% of the total value added within the business sector, mainly in the Manufacturing sector (13.7%). However, small and medium enterprises (10-249 employees) had the greatest potential, hiring 40.7% of the employed and creating 46.9% of the total value added in the business sector.
