According to preliminary figures from Statistics Austria, 1 210 bankruptcies were recorded in the third quarter of 2022. Compared with the months July to September of the previous year, when 744 bankruptcies were recorded, this corresponds to an increase of around 63 %.

Bankruptcies have returned to the Corona pre-crisis level: In the period from July to September 2022, the number of bankruptcies was 1 210, about 63 % higher than in the same quarter of the previous year and nearly at the level of Q3 2019 (1 208). In the first nine months of 2022, a total of 3 542 bankruptcies were recorded, almost as many as in the pre-crisis period of 2019 (3 697) and already more than in 2021 as a whole (3 009).

In parallel, 14 560 registrations of legal units were recorded in Q3 2022, which is slightly less (-5 %) than in Q3 2021. Registrations also decreased slightly (-8 %) compared to the same quarter before the start of the pandemic (Q3 2019). Overall, there were 46 924 registrations in the first nine months of 2022. Compared to the corresponding pre-crisis period, July to September 2019 (51 464 registrations), this represents a minus of around 9 %. In general, however, the number of newly registered legal units remains relatively stable from quarter to quarter.
Services sector and wholesale and retail trade again leading in bankruptcies and registrations The highest number of bankruptcies in Q3 2022 was recorded in financial services/other services (277), wholesale and retail trade (226), construction (200) and accommodation and food service activities (155), with the number of bankruptcies generally depending on the number of active enterprises in the individual economic branches. Comparatively few bankruptcies were recorded in information and communication (41) and manufacturing (80). For Q3 2021, a similar distribution of bankruptcies among the economic sectors can be seen.

In terms of registrations, the highest numbers in Q3 2022 were counted for personal services (3 963), financial services/other services (3 951) and wholesale and retail trade (2 608). Relatively low registration numbers were recorded for transportation and storage (535), information and communication (766) and accommodation and food service activities (841). For Q3 2021, a very similar distribution of registrations among the economic branches is shown.
