According to research by RTL Nieuws and Follow the Money, over 900 enterprises in the Netherlands are currently owned at least 50% by Chinese corporations or the Chinese government. The majority work in consumer products and financial services, while some are engaged in more delicate industries, according to the study. Some of them operate at the port of Rotterdam; the Chinese own the huge shipping company Cosco, for instance. A total of 122 companies work in the IT and telecoms industries, and several of them are connected to technical universities in the Netherlands.

According to RTL, China made about 90% of its investments in Europe between 2018 and 2021 in Britain, Germany, France, and the Netherlands, making it a significant country for Chinese investors. China is the biggest threat to the Netherlands’ economic security, according to the most recent annual report from the Dutch intelligence service AIVD, which has been warning about China’s growing power for years.
