Spain received a total of 15.66 billion euros in foreign investment during the first half of the year 2022 –between January and June– representing an increase of 53.4%, and with the Community of Madrid leading when it comes to attracting funds from abroad, 10.927 billion euros, i.e. 69.8% of the total.

This is reflected in the latest data published by the Secretary of State for Trade at the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism relating to the first two quarters of the year.

The 15.66 billion euros that Spain has attracted in foreign investment for the year as a whole represents an increase of 53.4% compared to the same period last year, resulting from better performance in terms of investment during both the first and second quarters, with amounts of 8.053 billion euros and 7.606 billion euros, respectively.

By region, the Community of Madrid attracted the highest volume of investment between January and June, with 10.927 billion euros. It was followed by Catalonia, with a total of 1.69 billion euros; Navarre (580 million euros); the Basque Country (546 million euros); Castile and Leon (401 million euros); the Valencian Community (353 million euros); the Balearic Islands (330 million euros); Asturias (266 million euros); the Canary Islands (215 million euros); and Andalusia (200 million euros).

Castile-La Mancha (54 million euros); Aragon (50 million euros); Galicia (19 million euros); Cantabria (8 million euros); Extremadura (5 million euros); La Rioja (5 million euros); Murcia (3 million euros) and Ceuta and Melilla (359,000 euros) attracted less than 100 million in foreign investment.

By industry and country of origin
The sector that attracted the most foreign investment during the first half of the year was the ‘manufacture of machinery and equipment’, with 1.856 billion euros of investment. This was followed by investments in ‘electricity, gas, steam and air supply’ with 1.302 billion euros and ‘telecommunications’ with 1.29 billion euros.

In terms of the country of origin for investments, Luxembourg stands out at 6.703 billion euros, followed by the United States (2.533 billion euros) and the United Kingdom (2.218 billion euros).
