Turkey has changed its name to Türkiye in order to increase the country’s brand value as well as to avoid centuries of confusion with the popular American edible bird.

According to UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric, the UN received an official letter from Turkish officials requesting that the country’s name be changed, and the change took effect immediately after the letter was received.

All foreign languages will henceforth refer to Turkey as “Türkiye,” and the country’s full official name will be “Republic of Türkiye.”

Since January, the administration has been pursuing a strategy to change the country’s name in order to strengthen the country’s brand image.
