Sectoral Water and Wastewater Statistics, 2018 in Turkey
17.5 billion m3 of water was abstracted from resources
In 2018, municipalities, villages, manufacturing industry establishments, thermal power plants, organized industrial zones and mining establishments abstracted 17.5 billion m3 of water from the environment. Out of this amount, 56.2% was abstracted from sea, 15.1% from dams, 14% from wells, 8.7% from springs, 3.9% from rivers, 1.8% from lakes/artificial lakes and 0.2% from other resources.
14.8 billion m3 of wastewater was discharged to receiving bodies
In 2018, municipalities, villages, manufacturing industry establishments, thermal power plants, organized industrial zones and mining establishments discharged 14.8 billion m3 of wastewater to receiving bodies. Out of this amount, 77.4% was discharged to sea, 18.7% to rivers, 1.1% to dams, 0.9% to septic tanks, 0.5% to lakes and artificial lakes, 0.2% onto land and 1.2% to other receiving bodies.
81% of discharged wastewater (excluding cooling water) was treated
In 2018, out of the total amount of wastewater discharged by municipalities, villages, manufacturing industry establishments, thermal power plants, organized industrial zones and mining establishments, 62.5% was cooling water, whereas 37.5% was other wastewater excluding cooling water. 80.9% of wastewater (excluding cooling water) directly discharged to receiving bodies was treated.

EXPLANATIONS
Within the scope of water and wastewater statistics, Turkish Statistical Institute compiles data from all municipalities, manufacturing industry establishments with 50 or more employees, thermal power plants having an installed capacity of more than 100 MW, organized industrial zone directorates having completed their infrastructure, and mining establishments, which submitted production data for the year before the reference year to General Directorate of Mining and Petroleum Affairs or had a new licence for the reference year.
Data on villages’ networks and treatment plants have been received from General Directorate of Provincial Administration and amount of water and wastewater of villages have been estimated. In municipalities and villages, amount of water abstracted for distribution via water supply networks and amount of wastewater discharged via sewerage are covered.
By the publication of this press release, it is aimed to present data on water abstracted from the environment and wastewater directly discharged to the environment for all available economic sectors, excluding transfers between different economic sectors.
